about

One of my favorite jokes to say when I play live is that if I forget the words, you won't have any clue because you've probably never heard this song before. I thought it would be great to include it in a song. And especially in the opener of my new album here. Unfortunately, my joke backfired for a while because the last half of this song remained instrumental until I could figure out what else I wanted to say. I think I get the message across pretty well though. You get stuck in a rut and realize that the things you do between waking up and falling asleep really don't make your life worth as much as you want it to. Gotta get up, break out of the routine, and do what makes you happy - no matter what the cost. As the recording progressed, it sort of turned out like a 1950s rockabilly arrangement. I like that. It's one of my favorite periods of music and I've never really done anything like it before.

lyrics

Well my old guitar is filled with dust
And these old strings are covered in rust
And I'm afraid I'm bound to break a string or two
My old back is just a little bit achy
And this old voice is just a little bit shaky
But I'm still sitting here singing songs for you

I've been up and I've been down
Upside down and twisted around
I haven't been doing the things I used to do
But something new has got a hold on me
I've been too long in misery
It's time to start breaking free
And making something out of me

So if you stick around for the rest of the show
I've got plenty of songs that you don't know
So if you're ready, I am willing to go
But if I don't know the words, well that's alright
'Cause neither do you, so just sit tight
I'm bound to figure them out by the end of the night

Well there's so many things that I'd like to know
And so many places I'd like to go
I've been spending my time avoiding the passing lane
Spinning in circles on this great big earth
Waiting for some kind of new rebirth
Or else I'm about to go clean down insane

Well we've all been up, we've all been down
I'm not treading on any new ground
I'd like to think that we've all got a fresh new start
I don't know what I've been told
But I'm pretty sure we've gotta grow old
And if you know that's gotta be true
We've all got something better to do

So if you stick around for the rest of the show
I've got plenty of songs that you don't know
So if you're ready, I am willing to go
But if I don't know the words, well that's alright
'Cause neither do you, so just sit tight
I'm bound to figure them out by the end of the night
