This song has been troubling me for a while. I had it completely finished and I totally re-recorded everything just about a month before this album's release. It isn't about anyone in particular. I just had these lines in my head for a while and decided to put them into a song. The intermittent 5/4 time signature sort of adds an unsettling quality to the unsettling lyrics. And I went for a "Pleasant Valley Sunday"-like reverbed ending… maybe I went too far. The music completely fades out and all you hear is the reverb signals. Trippy, man.
lyrics
You're looking for something that is not here
You're looking, but you will not believe your eyes
You refuse to let it in, you refuse to let it out
You keep waiting & waiting and you test the clock
Turn off the phone, make sure the door is locked
The strangers outside, they've got nothing for you
You can't see their eyes, just the haze of blue
… around your soul… your tortured soul…
… your soul… your poor tortured soul…
You must think you're the only one
Cut a little deeper next time
Trying to live but you're dying to die
You're stuck in the future in that godforsaken place
Cut a little deeper next time
Trying to live but you're dying to die
I wish I could save you but it's much too late
To care about you at all
You're waiting for a rainier day
This is nothing, the darkened skies cannot compare
To the thoughts up in your mind
Whatever they may be
You keep on searching but your luck ran out
You keep tryin' to find what it's all about
The strangers outside, they've got nothing on you
So you run & hide between your shades of blue
… around your soul… your poor soul…
… your tortured soul… your damned soul…
You must think you're the only one
Cut a little deeper next time
Trying to live but you're dying to die
You're stuck in the future in that god damned place
Cut a little deeper next time
Trying to live but you're dying to die
To hell with trying to save you anymore
I was done so many years ago.
